At Lyka, we believe nourishing your dog with real food goes hand-in-paw with protecting the planet they play on.
As Australia’s only carbon-negative dog food, sustainability is part of every decision we make — from big-picture moves like solar-powered kitchens and local ingredient sourcing, to the everyday acts like composting organic waste at HQ.
We’re here to be transparent about the steps Lyka takes to tread lightly on the Earth and how these choices benefit your dog, too. Whether it’s cutting waste or rethinking packaging, it all comes back to one principle: good for your dog, good for the planet.
Lyka's top sustainability statistics:
🌱 800,000 kWh of solar power generated in 2024*
🌱5,000 kg of food donated to shelters*
🌱2,145 tonnes of 'ugly' produce saved from landfill and used in our meals
🌱257,000 native trees planted with Greenfleet
🌱182,000 kg of plastic waste removed from the environment – the equivalent of 20 million plastic bottles
From farm to bowl: sourcing ingredients close to home
Every Lyka meal starts with real food ingredients we source close to home. 85-95% of our ingredients come from Australian farmers. Fresh, Aussie-grown produce means fewer transport emissions and better nutrition for your pup.
We also have rigorous screening processes to make sure they uphold the highest standards of food quality, social and environmental practices. Take our Sardine Snaps — made with 100% wild-caught Australian sardines, harvested without fish aggregating devices to reduce by-catch.
Cooking with care, using less energy
We’ve installed solar panels in our Dandenong South kitchen and our Wetherill Park facility, with plans to install more panels at other sites very soon.
In 2024 alone, our solar-powered facilities produced over 800,000 kWh. That’s enough to charge an electric vehicle for 4 million kilometres!
We gently cook our Lyka meals at 90°C — preserving nutrients and using less energy than dry food, which is often cooked above 200°C. Compared to traditional kibble, Lyka generates just one-tenth of the emissions.
Rethinking waste
We don’t like waste, in any shape or form. That’s why we’ve developed multiple ways to significantly reduce waste and minimise landfill.
Fuelling more than dogs
Nothing goes to waste — not even the cooking fat. It’s collected and turned into biodiesel and soap.
Waste not, want not: food for pups that need it most
We continue to donate meals to animal shelters. So far in 2025, Lyka has donated over 860kg of food to animal shelters. That's approximately 5,000kg to date!
Saving water
We’re committed to saving water by reducing our consumption and recycling.
Our facility in Melbourne has auto cleaning systems to increase water efficiency while reducing consumption. We also have a stormwater collection tank where water is reused for toilets and gardens instead of going to waste.
The beauty of ‘ugly’ veg
Around 30% of fresh produce is discarded because it’s too “ugly” for supermarket shelves. At Lyka, we see the value in these perfectly imperfect veggies — they’re just as nutritious, and your dog doesn’t care about a slightly crooked carrot. Plus, by not ending up in landfills, these veggies don’t release methane and carbon dioxide into the atmosphere.
Since 2021, we've used approximately 2,145 tonnes of 'ugly' broccoli, butternut squash, carrot, cauliflower, purple sweet potato, and cabbage.
Packaging that protects the planet
We’ve rethought every layer of our packaging to be better for the planet — from meal pouches to delivery boxes. Using renewable, recycled and compostable materials, we’ve designed our packaging to minimise waste without compromising on quality or convenience.
Delivery boxes
Your dog’s meals arrive in our signature green boxes, made from 100% recycled cardboard and printed with non-toxic ink, and taped with FSC-certified kraft paper. Once you’ve unpacked, just pop the box in your household recycling bin.
Inside, your box is insulated with biodegradable wool and plant-based wrapping. You can compost the liners, or get creative and reuse them as garden mulch, worm farm padding or even kennel insulation.
Meal and treat packaging
We were the first company in Australia to use sugarcane-based bioplastic for dog food pouches — a renewable, recyclable alternative to conventional plastic. Just rinse and drop them at your nearest soft plastics recycling point.
We make our treat bags from paper and PLA, a compostable plastic from fermented plant starch that breaks down in about 30 weeks. Even the desiccant sachets are more sustainable — made from clay and paper, not plastic.
Our supplements come in recyclable paper tubes, keeping packaging low-impact across our full range.
Cutting carbon at every kilometre
We’re focused on reducing emissions at every stage of your dog’s food journey, including how it gets to your door. Transport is a major contributor to climate change, and we’re doing our part to cut carbon and support low-emission travel.
Smarter deliveries
The vast majority of Lyka meals go straight from our kitchen to yours to reduce our carbon footprint.
Charging ahead
We’ve installed EV chargers at all our sites to support team members who choose to drive electric, helping cut emissions from daily commutes.
Everyday sustainability at Lyka
Sustainability isn’t just part of our big-picture strategy — it’s embedded in our daily habits. From how we work to what we reuse, we make intentional choices to minimise our environmental impact.
Hybrid work, lower emissions
Our teams in Sydney and Melbourne have access to flexible office spaces, but many choose to work from home. This reduces commuting emissions and supports a better work–life balance.
Thoughtful consumption
We aim to reduce waste before it starts. Where possible, we buy second-hand — from laptops to furniture — and only purchase what we truly need.
Recycling that works
Our sites are set up with dedicated recycling streams for:
Soft plastics
Paper and cardboard
Organic waste
Comingled recyclables
We’ve also replaced disposable cups with a coffee cup library and installed an espresso machine to reduce single-use waste at Sydney HQ.
Cleaner cleaning
Our cleaning teams use eco-friendly products that minimise the risk of water contamination, keeping harmful chemicals out of our waterways.
Our partners in planet care
Sustainability is a team effort. That’s why we work with like-minded organisations to protect nature, reduce waste and empower local communities. We’re proud to roll up our sleeves and get involved.
Planting trees, restoring ecosystems
We’ve partnered with Greenfleet to offset our carbon pawprint by planting native trees across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.
Since the partnership began, we’ve helped plant over 257,000 native trees — helping to restore ecosystems, support biodiversity and remove carbon from the atmosphere. Our team also volunteers on the ground, helping to plant and maintain these sites.
We also support Pocket City Farms in Camperdown, a community initiative that educates people on sustainable food systems, tackles food insecurity and improves local green spaces. From weeding and planting to mulching and digging, our team loves getting stuck in.
Fighting plastic pollution
We avoid single-use plastic wherever we can — from compostable poo bags to biodegradable gloves and pallet wrap.
We’ve also taken action beyond our own supply chain:
Clean Up Australia: Our staff regularly volunteer to collect waste in polluted areas.
Billion Bottle Cleanup: We’ve partnered with this organisation since 2024 and supported their plastic cleanup efforts in Cebu, Philippines.
rePurpose Global: We are ethically engaged in their mission to remove plastic from nature and change the way the world uses the material.
With Billion Bottle Cleanup and rePurpose, we’ve helped remove over 182,000 kg of plastic waste from the environment — the equivalent of 20 million bottles.
Lyka: a certified B corporation
Lyka is proud to be a certified B Corporation, joining a global movement of businesses working to be a force for good, for people, pups and the planet.
Becoming a B Corp means meeting the highest verified standards for social and environmental impact and staying accountable. The process involves a deep dive into five key areas: governance, workers, customers, environment and community. And it doesn’t stop there. We’re committed to maintaining certification through ongoing progress and transparency.
For Lyka, being a B Corp means:
Backing local farmers and producers with sustainably sourced ingredients and low-impact production
Creating a safe, inclusive and flexible workplace for every team member
Minimising waste, reducing emissions and supporting environmental restoration
Operating with full transparency and integrity — no greenwashing, no guesswork
At our core, we believe doing right by dogs means doing right by the world they live in. This certification reflects a commitment we’ve always had — now it’s just official.
